Helen wants a hot meal and a door she can lock . She arrived alone an hour ago , and the hostel lobby is louder than her room . A man from the next corridor says a few people are walking to a bar by the river . He tells her to come . She wants to . The train was long , and eating alone in a new city has a quiet she does not like yet . She does not say yes yet . First she sends her sister the hostel address and a photo of the front door . A copy of her passport is already in her email . Another copy is folded inside a book , not in the pocket with the real passport . Last night she downloaded maps that work without a signal . The charger stays in her jacket , because a phone with no battery is a poor companion on a street she cannot name . The man says the bar is close . Close is not a place she can send . She asks at the desk . The woman there knows the dinner downstairs , which is in this building , and she does not know the bar . Helen stands with her bag still on one shoulder and feels the wish to be easy , the guest who always says yes . Then she thanks him and says she is eating here . If she wants the river later , she will go when she can name the street . Downstairs , two women from the women's dorm are at the long table . One of them pushes a chair out with her foot . Nobody asks Helen to tell her whole life . The soup is plain and hot . She texts her sister : dinner in the hostel , not out . A short reply comes back , and that is the check - in she promised . Through the lobby window she sees the group leave . She lifts her spoon and lets them go . Her key is in her pocket . The maps are on her phone . The city is still outside , and it will be there in the morning . Tonight she knows the name of the door she will walk back through .
