Owen wanted the clinic to treat his ankle before the swelling made the walk back to the hotel a worse idea . He was in Chamonix , on the valley floor , and the path he had left was a signed walk , not a climb . The receptionist asked how he would pay . He said he had travel insurance , then realized he had never read past the words " medical emergency " on the front of the policy . He sat in the waiting room and opened the document on his phone . The medical section was short and clear : treatment for an unexpected injury could be claimed , with a receipt and a note from the doctor . The next heading was exclusions . Mountaineering was there . So were scuba diving and off - piste skiing . Hiking was not on the list . Neither was walking . He read the lines twice , because the difference was the reason he was in this chair and not on a rock face . He wrote to the insurer before he agreed to an X - ray . He named the town , said the injury happened on a signed path in the valley , and attached a photo of the exclusion page , his passport , and the estimate the receptionist had printed . He did not describe the walk as a climb , and he did not ask them to decide what mountaineering meant in general . He asked whether this policy , with this page , covered a twisted ankle from that path . The reply was shorter than the policy . They would not pay the clinic at the desk . The document he had bought said reimbursement : he should pay , keep the bill and the doctor's note , and send both . Walking a signed valley path was not among the excluded activities on the page he had photographed . They still had to see the papers . Owen paid with his card . He asked the doctor for a written note that said what had happened and what had been done , and he photographed that too . Then he walked slowly back toward the hotel with the papers in his jacket . The insurer had not promised money . They had told him which pages to keep , and he still had them .
