Lena wanted three nights in Hoi An , and she wanted to know who would receive the money . The booking site showed two guesthouses near the old town . Both called the stay responsible . Only one of them gave her a detail she could check . The first listing put a green leaf under the price and the words " eco - friendly " under the leaf . She looked through the rooms , the breakfast , and the lane that led toward the river . She found no named standard . No Green Key . No EarthCheck . The leaf was a picture . It did not say who had given it , or for what . The second listing showed the EarthCheck mark and a page she could open . She had seen the name before . EarthCheck is a real certification program for tourism businesses , and Green Key is another . She opened EarthCheck's site long enough to see that the program publishes its own description of what it checks . She did not treat that page as a report on this house . A logo still does not tell you who owns a place , what the staff are paid , or where breakfast comes from . The mark answered a narrower question : the listing was pointing at a named program , not at a leaf . It did not answer the question she had sat down to ask . She wrote before she paid . She asked who owned the house , and whether the money from the booking site reached them . A woman named Mai replied . She said that she and her parents ran the house , and that the payment came to them after the site's fee . Lena could not check that sentence from her own desk . She could see that the listing named EarthCheck , and she could keep Mai's name for the afternoon she arrived . She booked the second room and closed the other tab . Under the confirmation she typed two lines : EarthCheck is on the page , and the owner gave a name . Green Key was the other name she had learned to look for , and this house had not used it . She left that line there and shut the laptop .
