Lena wanted a summer that did more than fill a calendar . She had saved for a flight and a plain room , and she wanted to teach English in a school that would still be there after she left . A friend sent two links . One offered a short stay in an orphanage , a certificate , and no need for teaching experience . The other offered a longer stay with a host family , a short course before the first lesson , and hours beside teachers who already knew the class . The first page was easy to like . It showed a bright room , smiling children , and a line about making a real difference . Lena looked for the sentence that said who chose the lessons . She did not find it . The fee was called a contribution , but the page never said how much reached the school . She had read that some volunteer trips sell the feeling of helping and put profit ahead of the community . She closed the tab . The second program spoke more quietly . It asked her to live simply , to learn a few greetings before she arrived , and to treat food and a bed as part of the work . A fee remained . The page named what it covered : training , a place to sleep , and a donation the school could account for . The last lines did the real work . Local teachers would set the plan . Volunteers would follow it . A guest was there to support the class , not to replace the person who taught it all year . Before she paid , Lena sent one question . Who decides what these children need this month ? A coordinator answered the same day . The teachers decide , she wrote . You will sit and listen at the start . Then you will lead one short activity they have already chosen . If a task does not help the class , we drop it . That was enough . Lena still wanted the journey , and she wanted to leave the school no worse for her visit . She booked the vaccinations her clinic advised , arranged travel insurance , and practiced please , thank you , and I do not understand . She left her homemade lesson pack at home . A notebook left room for someone else's plan . On the first morning her host mother walked her to the gate and gently fixed her greeting . The teacher set a stack of picture cards on the desk and nodded toward a chair at the side . Listen first , she said . Lena sat . The summer she had wanted began with another person's voice .
