Ruth's suitcase was still open on the floor , and the booking page was already bright . She had barely unpacked . What she wanted was not a new city . She wanted the moment after the ticket is paid , when the room she is standing in stops counting . She had a name for that pull , taken from a video she only half trusted . Travel addiction . The phrase did the work of an explanation : if it was an addiction , then the open suitcase was a symptom and the next bus was a kind of treatment . She liked how complete that sounded . A complete story asks nothing from you except belief . It is not a diagnosis . The main manuals clinicians use do not list it . A person can crave the next departure , feel flat when she stays , and still not have a disorder with a code . Ruth wanted the code anyway . A code would mean the restlessness was happening to her , and that she did not have to choose . The nomadic part was simpler , and it was real . Her work fit on a laptop . No one at the company asked which kitchen she used , so she had stopped signing long leases . That arrangement is a way of living , not a fever . It can be chosen on a Tuesday and kept on a Wednesday . An urge that will not let the Tuesday finish is a different thing , and she was no longer sure which of the two she was in . Last week she had posted a photograph of a cliff path and a cup of coffee . She had not posted the hour she spent on a form , or the evening she ate crackers because the shop had closed and she did not know the street well enough to find another . The posts made the month look like freedom . The kitchen made it look like a person who is good at leaving and tired of arriving . She hovered over the pay button . The city on the screen was a name , a time , and a sum she had not checked twice . She did not need the name . What she needed was the click . That was the part she had been calling an addiction , and it was also the part she could still refuse . She shut the laptop . The suitcase stayed open . She was not cured of anything , because there had been no disease to cure tonight . She was a woman who wanted to leave a room , and for this one night she let the room win .
