Carmen stood in the yard near Jaén with the invoice in her hand . The truck doors were open . The boxes were for a food shop in Montreal , and she wanted them on the road before the afternoon sun reached the bottles . Mateo , the driver , had already lifted the first stack . " Is this the oil on the paper ? " he asked . " Extra virgin , " Carmen said . " The shop asked for that . Not the oil we sell here in town . " Her father , Rafael , came out of the packing room . He had taken a bottle from the open box by the door . He turned it until she could read the label . It was their market oil . The invoice did not name that oil . She wanted to close the box and send the truck . If she did , the load would leave now , and the shop in Montreal would be the first place to find the mistake . " Put the stack down , " she said . Mateo set it on the ground . The sun was already on the yard . He looked at it , then at her , and he waited . They opened the boxes one by one . Carmen held each label beside the invoice . Rafael carried the wrong bottles to a table under the roof , out of the sun . She did not know how the market oil had got into the load . A closed box would not tell her . So she did not stop after the box by the door . The other boxes matched the paper . Carmen put the right bottles in and pressed the tape flat with her thumb . Mateo loaded the truck again . He fixed a numbered seal on the doors and read the number out loud . Carmen wrote that number on the invoice , under Jaén and Montreal , and she wrote the name of the oil next to it . Then she read the number back to him . He nodded only when the two of them had said the same one . The market bottles stayed under the roof . Carmen watched the truck until it turned onto the road . She folded the invoice only then . The oil Montreal had not ordered was still in the yard .
