Maya wanted the studio before anyone else in the room did . Customers already opened its scheduling tool every morning , and her own team had kept postponing the same feature . Buying the smaller company looked quicker than building the tool again . She had said that in the deck . On Thursday a folder arrived with a price on the first page and a blank where the closing date should have been . She read it with the door shut . Her company would buy the studio . The name on the studio door would come down . The tool would live inside her product . The pages mostly agreed with that story : contracts , a customer list , a lawyer's note that some questions were still open . Nothing in the first half made her pause . Omar from finance came in and stayed on his feet . He turned the folder to a page she had treated as routine . " We can buy the company , " he said . " We cannot buy her decision to stay . The engineer who wrote the tool has not agreed to remain after we close . Nothing in this folder keeps her . " Maya had filed that under hiring , a problem for the week after the announcement . Omar had not . If the engineer resigned , they would own software their side had never built , and the person who knew its odd corners would be gone . The number on the first page only made sense if she stayed long enough to teach it . Nobody had asked her whether she would . She wanted to say they could hire around the gap . She did not say it . The figure they had defended all week assumed the author would still be in the building , patient enough to walk other people through the parts that had no comments . A new hire could learn the screen . The reasons inside the code were a different lesson , and only one person could give it . " Then we wait , " she said . " We can still buy it , " Omar said . " We stop telling the board that the product is the whole asset . " She closed the folder . In the morning she would call the studio , and the first question would not be about features or customers . It would be whether the engineer wanted to work for them at all .
