Nadia wanted the offer out before anyone left for the weekend . A model had marked a set of customers in red , the ones it called likely to leave , and she had written them a short note with a reason to stay . The slide on the wall was calm . Red on the left , the note on the right . She had asked Jonah from the data team into the room so he could say the list was sound and she could send it . He did not look at the slide for long . " Open one person , " he said . She opened the first row . Elena had paid for a pottery course in the spring and had come to the sessions . The course had ended . She had bought nothing since , because that course had nothing left to sell her . The model had seen the payments stop and filed her with the people who were walking out . Nadia had wanted a rescue . The next names she opened were the same kind of story . A man who had taken the spring course and stopped when it stopped . Friends who had come for a workshop and gone home . She had pictured anger , a complaint , a slow fade . What she had was a row of endings . The model had found them . Nobody had asked it to tell an ending from a person walking away . A note with a discount would not reopen a class that was over . It would land in those inboxes as a strange apology for a silence that was not a complaint . Nadia could already hear how it would sound if Elena wrote back to ask what she was meant to do with a code for a course she had finished . " So we throw the red out , " she said . " We keep the red , " Jonah said . " It answered the question we typed . We typed ' no further payment ' and then we read the answer as ' unhappy . ' " She closed the draft . The offer could wait until a silence meant someone was leaving , and not someone who had already got what they came for . She still wanted to write to the people who were actually drifting . She was not going to start with Elena .
