Mina had promised her sister one thing for the lunch : do not let Uncle Pete turn the baby into a debate . Sam was asleep in a basket by the bread , and Pete had already started . " He has your hair , Dan , " he said to the father . " I do not see Lila in that face at all . Sometimes the mother just does not show . " Lila looked at Mina . That look was the promise , asking to be kept . The cousins were already leaning in , the way children do when an adult sounds sure . The plates were only half cleared . If Mina let the talk run , Sam would stay a puzzle for the rest of the afternoon . Mina did not want a classroom in the middle of lunch . She wanted Pete to stop before the cousins made a game of it . She lifted Sam , kept a hand under his head , and stepped into the light from the window . " Look at the mouth , " she said . " The hair is Dan's . The mouth is Lila's . It is small because he is asleep , so you walked past it . " Pete smiled as if he had caught her . " Then draw the line . Half her face , half his . That is the fair way to say it . " " That is the part that is not fair , " Mina said . " He is not a picture cut down the middle . He got a set of instructions from Lila and a set from Dan . They sit in his cells . Those instructions can come out as hair from one parent and a mouth from the other . They do not have to cover equal parts of the face . Missing Lila in the hair does not mean Lila gave him nothing . " Sam woke and made a small angry sound . Lila laughed , and the laugh had the same shape as that sound , only glad . Dan reached over . His hand and Lila's met on the blanket , and the baby held one finger from each , which was not a prize for either of them . Pete opened his mouth , then closed it . Mina could see the next question forming , the kind that wants a chart . She put Sam back in the basket and sat down . " He is both , " she said . " That is the whole of it . " Lila touched Mina's wrist under the table , once . Pete reached for the bread and let the baby's face alone .
