Priya wanted one line that would stop people in the corridor . The open day was tomorrow , the poster was still a draft , and the only sentence with any heat in it was the one Dr . Lang had already crossed out : " It checks every possible answer at the same time . " She had lifted it from a video , and it sounded like a machine with a secret . In the margin his pencil had left one word . No . The rest of the hallway already knew how to please a crowd . Down the corridor a robot arm picked up cups and set them down , and people loved it because the trick was visible . Priya's machine sat behind glass and offered nothing to point at . She had volunteered to write the caption . She was not going to spend the day beside a sentence that sounded like a warning on a bottle . Dr . Lang stopped in the doorway with a mug . That meant he had time to spoil the line properly . " If I print yours , what do I tell a student who asks to see all those answers ? " she said . She was not really asking . She wanted him to admit the exciting sentence could survive one clever question . " You will have nothing to show them , " he said . " When we measure , we get one result . There is no list waiting on the screen afterward . We run that circuit again and again , and we keep count of what comes up . The pattern is the part I can stand beside . The video left that out . A measurement does not hand over every answer at once . I will not put a promise like that on a wall with my name near it . " Priya's hands stayed on the keys . She could still print the video sentence and call it a simplification . She could also picture him saying no again , in the corridor , in front of whoever had believed her . She deleted the line . Under the title she typed the dull one , the one she could repeat without watching his face . When we measure , we get one result . We run it again . We read the pattern . The page came out of the printer warm . She read it in the voice she would use if a stranger stopped , and the voice held . She pinned it up before the exciting sentence could find its way back .
