Marcus wanted Mrs . Quinn to take the bag . She had come for it , and then she had stayed on the customer side of the counter with her hands in her coat , watching a video with the sound almost off . The caption promised tiny machines that would swim to the trouble and deal with it . Her face had the careful look of a person about to leave a thing behind . Quinn looked at the bag , not at Marcus . " And if the fridge is wrong ? " " Then you ring us before you take any , " Helen said . " We would rather have the call than a guess . " The impressive sentence died behind Marcus's teeth . He had wanted Mrs . Quinn to feel brave . She picked up the cold bag in both hands , holding it close so the walk would not warm it . She thanked Helen . She did not thank the phone . At the door she checked that the sleeve was shut , and then she stepped out into the street with the bag still cold against her coat .
