Helen had her coat on under the blanket when Dr . Okonkwo came back with the chart . Visiting hours were over . Her sister was already on a night shift , and the children would wake to a neighbor who had said she could not stay . Helen wanted her shoes . He wanted her in the bed until morning . The neighbor's message was still lit on the locker , short and without comfort . Helen had read it until the words stopped moving . She could stay and be easy to praise , or she could go and be the person those children were expecting . What she would not do was let the safer choice be treated as the only adult one . " The redness is still moving up the arm , " he said . " I want one more dose , and I want you here if it gets worse . At home I cannot see you . " " I heard you the first time , " Helen said . " I am not confused , and I am not asking you to call the arm fine . I am asking for my shoes . " He sat , so he was not standing over her . " Then say it back to me . Not to soothe me . So I know what you are walking out with . " She kept her eyes on the coat buttons . " You think the infection is still spreading . You want another dose tonight , and a doctor near me if it climbs . If I leave , it may get worse where nobody with medical training is watching . You cannot see my kitchen from here . I still want to go , because if I stay , those children are alone . " A cart passed in the corridor and neither of them used the noise as a way out . He had another argument ready . She watched him set it down . She had given him what the form was for . Not obedience . Not a little performance of fear . She understood the risk he was willing to name , and she was refusing the night all the same . " I cannot make this your fault or mine with a better speech , " he said . " I can write that you heard me , and that you are choosing to leave . " " Write that , " Helen said . He turned the page toward her and kept his hand off the pen until she took it . She signed her name once . He set her shoes on the blanket , side by side , and did not add that she was brave .
