Elias wanted the model to hesitate . In the morning a seminar would ask him the question he still could not make smaller : when a system says that it is in pain , what , if anything , has been settled ? He did not want to arrive with only his own circling . He wanted a false start from the machine , a sentence that arrived and then chose a narrower claim , some sign that a word had been risked . He asked it once , and he took his hands off the keys . The reply came in even paragraphs . They were polite , and they were willing to go on . He read them standing , one hand on the back of the chair , and felt the particular irritation of being helped too smoothly . The prose drew a line he himself trusted . Saying what a system does is one claim . Saying what , if anything , it is like for that system is another . The page refused to treat fluency as proof of either . He could have set it in front of a class . Nothing on it looked costly . Ruth stopped in the doorway . She had heard the keyboard go quiet . " Did it understand you ? " He almost said no . No would have matched the disappointment , and it would have sounded like knowledge . He held it back . A stumble on the screen would have flattered him , and a stumble would not have answered her . A clumsy paragraph can belong to a system he has no way to look inside . A clean paragraph can be only the shape of an answer . The page fitted both stories , so it was not fit to repeat as a fact . " I don't know , " he said . " The smoothness is not the evidence I was treating it as . " Ruth did not push . He could see that she had wanted the tidy reply , a yes or a no she could carry down the hall . He had wanted a visible struggle . The model had given them sentences . Elias closed the laptop before any of those wants turned into a verdict about pain . The question was still open , as it had been before he typed it , and he let it stay open .
