Nora stopped at the top of the library steps and read the sign on the glass . The reading rooms were closed . She already knew that . What she needed was the courtyard behind them , the one with the tree and the old basin . Her sister Elise wanted the wedding photos there , not in a rented hall , and Nora had promised to look before she gave an answer . She tried the main door . It did not move . A man in a gray work jacket came around the corner with a bucket and a coil of hose . He saw her hand still on the handle . " They're on the roof , " he said . " Front's shut . " " I don't need a reading room , " Nora said . " I need the courtyard . My sister is waiting for a yes , and I will not give it unless I see the light in there . " He set the bucket down . Water slipped over the rim and darkened the step . " There's a door by the tree , " he said . " I'm not a guide . The stone is wet . " Nora looked back at the street . She could phone Elise from the steps and say the place was closed . Elise would take the hall , and the afternoon would turn into a list of chairs and napkins . Nora could already hear herself saying that was fine . She turned the corner instead . The path was narrow . The tree stood against the side wall , and under it a low door was held open with a brick . Nora went through . For a moment she thought she had the wrong yard . The benches she remembered were gone . A ladder leaned on the far wall , and a tarp covered a pile she did not touch . Then the basin caught the light , the same dull green she still had in her head , and the tree threw a thin shade across it . She walked the edge , away from the wet middle , and pictured Elise under that shade , in the dress she refused to call a gown . Her phone buzzed in her pocket . Elise . Nora kept her eyes on the basin and the tree . " Tell them yes , " she said .
