Renewable energy comes from natural sources that are constantly replenished. Unlike fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, renewable energy sources will not run out. The main types of renewable energy include solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass energy. These energy sources produce little to no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, making them environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional energy sources.

Solar energy harnesses power from the sun using photovoltaic panels or solar thermal collectors. Photovoltaic panels convert sunlight directly into electricity. Solar thermal systems use sunlight to heat water or air for buildings. Solar energy is abundant and available in most parts of the world. However, solar panels only generate electricity when the sun is shining, so energy storage is necessary for nighttime and cloudy days.

Wind energy uses large turbines to capture the kinetic energy of moving air. When wind blows, it spins the turbine blades, which turn a generator to produce electricity. Wind farms can be located on land or offshore where winds are stronger and more consistent. Wind energy has become increasingly cost-competitive with fossil fuels in recent years. However, wind turbines can be noisy and may affect bird populations if not properly sited.

Hydroelectric power generates electricity using the force of flowing water. Dams create reservoirs that store water, which is then released through turbines to generate electricity. Run-of-river systems generate electricity from the natural flow of rivers without large dams. Hydroelectric power is reliable and can provide baseload power. However, large dams can disrupt ecosystems and displace communities. They also require specific geographical conditions.

Geothermal energy taps into heat from beneath the Earth surface. This heat comes from the natural decay of radioactive materials and residual heat from the planet formation. Geothermal power plants use steam or hot water from underground to drive turbines and generate electricity. Geothermal energy provides constant power regardless of weather conditions. However, it is only available in regions with significant geothermal activity, such as areas near tectonic plate boundaries.

Biomass energy uses organic materials such as wood, agricultural waste, and biofuels to generate power. These materials can be burned directly for heat or converted into liquid fuels for transportation. Biomass is considered renewable because plants can be regrown. However, burning biomass releases carbon dioxide, though the carbon was recently absorbed by the plants. Sustainable biomass production is important to avoid deforestation and competition with food crops.

Energy storage is crucial for renewable energy systems because many renewable sources are intermittent. Batteries store electricity for later use and have become more efficient and affordable. Pumped hydro storage uses excess electricity to pump water uphill, then releases it through turbines when needed. Other storage technologies include compressed air and thermal storage. Improved storage technology helps overcome the challenge of variable renewable energy production.

The transition to renewable energy offers significant environmental benefits. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide and other pollutants that contribute to climate change and air pollution. Renewable energy produces little to no emissions during operation.
