Nina had one job . Get the folding chair to Auntie Pauline at the corner before the band arrived , so Pauline could see without standing the whole time . The text had been short . Knees were bad . Bring the chair . Don't be late . Notting Hill Carnival had already filled the road . Feathers , speakers , and people with paint on their arms were packed in tight , and the band Nina had hoped to slip past had stopped . A strap on a dancer's costume had snapped . The tall shape of feathers tipped , and a girl in silver boots was holding it up with one hand . " Excuse me , " Nina said . " I just need to get a chair through . " The girl looked close to tears . " Hold this . I can't tie it and hold it . " Nina did not want to hold it . She wanted the corner , and Pauline , and to put the chair down and be finished . The feathers slipped . Nina took one hand off the chair and caught the frame . They were heavier than they looked . Paint from someone's arm marked her wrist . The girl tied the strap , lost it , and tied it again . Behind them the band leaned forward , ready to move , and then stayed , because the feathers were still wrong . " I have to get to the corner , " Nina said . " Then hold still , " the girl said . " We're not moving if this drops . " Nina kept her hand on the frame . She could see a front step a little way off , and on it , shoes off , was Pauline . Not at the corner . Not waiting for the chair . Pauline was laughing at something a neighbor had said . She looked up , saw Nina under the feathers , and lifted both hands . The girl pulled the knot tight . The feathers rose and stayed . The band began to move , and the girl pressed the loose end of the strap into Nina's free hand without looking . Pauline put her hands around her mouth . " I'm sitting . Leave the chair . "
