Today they arrive early. Many sellers put fruit and vegetables on their tables. Colors fill the square. Leo sees red tomatoes and green beans on one long table. His dad points to an apple with shiny skin. He buys it for Leo. The apple is crisp and sweet. Leo eats half of it while they walk slowly between the stands.
At the next stand, a man sells fresh bread. The bread comes from a small bakery outside town. Steam rises from a cloth over the loaves. Leo's dad asks for a small loaf. The man smiles and puts the loaf in a paper bag. Leo carries the bag for a few steps before his dad takes it back.
They pass buckets of flowers on both sides of the path. Pink roses stand in a vase on one table. Leo remembers that his mom loves flowers on the kitchen table. They stop and choose a small bunch. A young girl wraps the stems in brown paper and ties a string around it.
From a corner of the market, music floats through the air. A young musician sits on a stool and plays a guitar. People pause to listen. Leo claps when the song ends. His dad drops a coin into an open case on the ground.
Before they leave, Leo spots a dog under a table near the cheese seller. The dog has a red collar and wags its tail. The owner is a friendly woman who sells soft cheese in jars. Leo asks if he can say hello to the dog. She says yes. Leo pets the dog once and feels happy.
They walk home with full bags. Leo puts the apple and the bread on the kitchen table. His mom comes downstairs and smiles at the flowers. She finds a glass jar and puts the roses near the window. The room looks brighter. Leo tells her about the musician and the dog. She laughs and says Saturday at the market is their best family tradition.
