When we arrived, other families were already sitting on blankets under tall trees. Children were playing with balls while parents were opening baskets. We chose a spot close to the path and spread our blue blanket on the grass.
Mom was arranging sandwiches when dark clouds appeared above the trees. Dad was pouring juice into cups when the first cool wind touched our faces. Ana, my sister, was taking photos of ducks on the water.
While we were eating, thunder sounded far away over the hills. A jogger ran past and said rain was coming fast from the west. We were packing napkins when large drops began to fall on the blanket.
People were running toward the park café as the sky turned grey. We were gathering our plates when Ana dropped a spoon in the grass. I was searching for it when Dad called us to leave the open field.
We were walking quickly to the wooden shelter near the playground. Mom was holding the food box above her head. Ana was laughing because her hair was getting wet, and I was trying to keep my shoes dry.
Under the roof, strangers were sharing space and talking about the sudden change. An older couple was offering us an extra bench while rain was beating on the metal roof. The sound was loud, but we felt safe together.
When the storm passed, sun was shining again and steam was rising from the paths. We were deciding whether to stay or go home when Ana found her spoon near a bench leg. Mom was smiling because nothing important was ruined.
We were eating the last sandwiches on the dry bench while birds were returning to the branches. Dad was telling a story about a picnic from his childhood when a rainbow appeared above the river. Ana was clapping because the colours looked bright against the grey clouds.
That Saturday mixed warm sunshine with cold rain in one short afternoon. We were picnicking, the storm was arriving, and later we were sharing food under a shelter with kind strangers. When we drove home, Ana was sleeping, and the park was quiet again behind us.
