On Friday evening Claire called me to confirm her arrival time. She asked me to text her if the platform changed because she had never used our station before. I promised I would message her when I saw the live board online.
Zoe asked me to pick up flowers because Claire loves bright colours. I bought yellow tulips at the market and wrapped them in paper at the shop. The seller smiled and told me to give them water when I got home.
Saturday arrived with light rain. Zoe packed umbrellas by the door and asked me to check the train app for delays. The app showed Claire's train would arrive at ten forty-two on platform four, only five minutes late.
We walked to the station together and waited near the ticket machines. Zoe asked a staff member to tell us when the Manchester service entered the tunnel. The staff member pointed to the board and said the train would reach us soon.
When Claire stepped onto the platform, we waved and called her name. She hurried over with a blue suitcase and hugged us both. I gave her the tulips and she thanked me with a laugh because the rain dotted the petals.
Claire asked us to help her find a taxi because her bag had a broken wheel. Zoe called a local driver she knew and told him to meet us at the south exit. I carried the smaller backpack while Claire pulled the suitcase slowly.
In the taxi Claire asked me to describe the guest room at our flat. I told her it faced the quiet courtyard and had clean towels on the bed. Zoe added that she prepared tea and fruit for us in the kitchen.
At home Claire unpacked and asked Zoe to show her the coffee machine. Zoe demonstrated the buttons and told her to press the middle one for a strong cup. Claire tried it and said the taste reminded her of a café near her office in Manchester.
After lunch we walked to the old bridge by the river. Claire asked me to take a photo of her with the water behind because her mother collected travel pictures. I took three shots and sent them to her phone before the clouds darkened.
Near the bridge a street musician played guitar. Claire dropped coins in his case and asked him to play one more song for us. He smiled and played a melody we all recognized from school days.
On Sunday Claire wanted to visit the museum before her evening train. Zoe checked opening hours online and told her the special exhibit closed at five. Claire asked us to join her because she did not want to explore the halls alone.
At the museum guide desk Claire asked the attendant to recommend the local history section.
