Interviewer: Tell me about the day the new manager arrived. Who met her first?
Lena: The chair of our board met her at the door and walked her through the building. He introduced us in the main office at ten o'clock. She smiled and asked us to call her Paula.
Marco: Paula shook hands with each of us and thanked us for volunteering. She asked me to show her the garden because she read about our vegetable beds in the newsletter.
Iris: She listened carefully when I described the reading programme. She asked me to send her the schedule by email and told me she would visit a session in April.
Interviewer: Did she ask you to change anything quickly?
Lena: She asked me to update the computer room posters because the login steps changed. She offered to print new copies for us if I sent her the file by Monday.
Marco: She told me to keep the compost area where it is, but she asked the caretaker to build a low fence to protect the beds. The caretaker showed her the toolshed and promised he would finish the fence before spring planting.
Iris: She invited me to join a small team planning the summer fair. She said the team would meet her every second Thursday and asked us to bring ideas from last year.
Interviewer: How did the staff support you during the first weeks?
Lena: The receptionist helped me contact a trainer who could assist older learners with passwords. Paula followed up and told me the trainer would visit us in May.
Marco: A young staff member joined me on Saturday and helped me carry soil bags to the beds. Paula saw us working and brought us tea from the kitchen.
Iris: The librarian lent me new picture books and asked me to tell the children about the fair poster contest. Paula approved the idea and said she would judge the entries with two parents from the school.
Interviewer: What surprised you about Paula?
Marco: She remembered my name after one meeting and greeted me in the corridor the next week. Small things like that matter when you volunteer for years without much contact with management.
Lena: She did not rush us. When I explained technical problems in the computer room, she asked me to demonstrate the issue and watched patiently while I restarted one machine.
Iris: She laughed with the children when I read a funny story last Saturday. After the session she thanked me and asked the parents to complete a short survey she would send them.
