When I enrolled at Bridge Language School, I had already studied English for six years in my home country. Teachers there had focused on grammar rules, but I had rarely spoken in long conversations before I arrived in Dublin.
During my first term I had attended classes every weekday morning. By December I had completed the intermediate level because I had worked hard on listening tasks. My host family had encouraged me to watch local news, and that habit had improved my comprehension quickly.
Since January of my second year I have taken an advanced discussion course. We have debated topics that had seemed too difficult when I had started the programme. My confidence has grown because I have expressed opinions without translating every sentence in my head.
The school has organised cultural trips since spring. I have visited museums that had closed for renovation before I had moved to Ireland. On one trip we had explored a coastal village where residents had spoken both English and Irish for generations.
Have my classmates made the same progress? Some have advanced faster because they had lived abroad before. Others have struggled until they have found study partners who have shared similar goals. Our group has supported one another since we had met in the orientation week.
My tutor Ms Byrne has taught academic writing since 2010. She has corrected essays that had contained confusing time references. Since her feedback I have paid closer attention to verb tenses when I have linked past events to present results.
I have been preparing for a certification exam since last autumn. The syllabus has required forms I had not practised regularly before I had joined the advanced track. Mock tests have shown steady improvement, though I have still made occasional mistakes with past perfect in complex sentences.
Before the exam I had reviewed timelines I had drawn for personal stories. Those diagrams had helped me see which events had happened first. Since then I have written paragraphs that have connected experiences from childhood to my current life in Dublin.
Part-time work has shaped my learning too. I have served coffee in a cafe where customers have asked about my accent since my first shift. Colleagues have shared expressions I had never heard in textbooks.
Looking back, I recognise that progress has depended on choices I had made outside the classroom. I have read novels, joined clubs, and spoken even when I had felt embarrassed. Two years have passed quickly, and I have built skills that textbooks alone had never provided.
