I am Priya. Last autumn my roommate Yuki and I rented our first shared flat near the university district. The week taught us how past choices shape present comfort more than we had expected as new tenants.

We had signed the lease in August after we had viewed four apartments between lectures. One flat had seemed perfect online, but we had noticed damp walls when we had opened cupboards during the viewing. Our current place had felt airy, especially after the landlord had shown us storage space we had not seen in the listing photos.

Before moving day we had ordered furniture from a shop that students had recommended for years. Delivery had arrived late because the truck had broken down on a motorway bridge. Yuki had slept on an air mattress I had borrowed from a neighbor who had moved out of the building the previous month.

On Tuesday the internet installer had missed the appointment we had booked two weeks earlier. I had worked from a café while Yuki had attended labs across campus. She had returned frustrated because the lab printer had failed during a submission she had prepared the night before.

We had cooked our first shared dinner on Wednesday with pans my aunt had gifted us. The smoke alarm had activated when I had left oil too long on the stove, which had amused Yuki more than it had worried her. We had opened windows and had laughed about beginner mistakes we had predicted anyway.

Thursday brought a surprise visit from the landlord, who had come to fix a tap that had dripped since we had unpacked. He had replaced a washer he had carried in his toolbox and had asked whether we had registered for council services online. We had not completed that step yet, so we had done it together before he had left.

By the weekend we had hung curtains, had labeled kitchen shelves, and had invited two classmates who had helped us carry boxes on moving day. They had brought plants we had placed on the balcony where morning sun had warmed the leaves.

Looking back at that first week, small problems had felt large only because everything was new. We had solved each issue with help from people who had experienced similar moves before us. The flat became home once routines had replaced boxes, and we had started to recognize the street sounds we had heard on our very first night.
