Friends since school: for/since (B1)

Letter to Clara,

You asked whether I remember when we became close. We have been friends since primary school, which means our connection has lasted for more than twenty years.

We have written to each other since we were nine, when teachers paired us for a pen-pal project within the same class. Notes passed between desks have evolved into messages we have sent across continents since you moved to Canada.

I have kept drawings you have mailed for fifteen years. Cartoons of teachers and playground scenes have filled a folder I have moved to every flat since university.

You have visited Britain three times since 2015. Each trip has lasted for two weeks, and we have picked up conversations instantly since childhood jokes still make sense.

We have supported each other through losses and celebrations for decades. When my father died, you have called every day for a week since the funeral. When you have published your first article, I have framed a printed copy since pride has felt insufficient in text alone.

Distance has tested us, yet honesty has preserved trust since we promised never to hide important news. Social media has helped superficially, but long emails since 2019 have carried real depth.

Our children have exchanged photos since they were born. They have grown up hearing stories about friendship that has existed since before their parents finished secondary school.

Some people have asked how we have maintained contact for so long. Habit and loyalty have answered that question since we valued consistency more than convenience.

Write again soon. Timelines measured with since and for have named what we share more clearly than vague nostalgia ever could.
