Regla principal
Un periodo lleva for (for six months) y un punto de inicio lleva since (since March). Si el estado continúa hasta ahora, el verbo va en present perfect: I have lived here since 2019. La pregunta es How long have you lived here?
Present perfect: recordatorio
| Tipo de frase | Cómo se forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Afirmativa | I / you / we / they have, he / she / it has + participio | She has known Tom for years. |
| Negativa | haven't / hasn't + participio | I haven't seen him for two years. |
| Pregunta | How long have / has + sujeto + participio | How long has he worked here? |
For o since
| Palabra | Qué indica | Ejemplos |
|---|---|---|
| for | un periodo, cuánto dura | for three years, for ten minutes, for a long time, for ages, for a while |
| since | un inicio, desde cuándo | since 2019, since Monday, since March, since 8 o'clock, since yesterday, since last summer |
En inglés el presente no sirve: I live here since 2019 es un error, y hay que decir I have lived here since 2019. Nuestro «desde» ante un momento es since, y «desde hace» o «durante» ante un periodo es for: no se dice since three years ni during three years. La pregunta «¿Cuánto tiempo hace que vives aquí?» es How long have you lived here?, con auxiliar y sin how much time.

Since con una frase en pasado
Después de since puede ir una frase completa en past simple con el hecho que marca el inicio: since I was a child, since we moved here, since she started school. La frase principal va en present perfect: I have known her since we were at school.
How long...? y las respuestas
A How long have you lived here? se responde con for (For six years.), con since (Since 2020.) o con una frase completa: I have lived here for six years. Las respuestas cortas a Have you...? son las del tema anterior: Yes, I have. / No, I haven't.
Qué verbos se usan
En afirmativa, con for y since van sobre todo verbos de estado: live, know, be, have (tener), work, want, like, love, own. En negativa también valen verbos de acción: I haven't seen him for two years. Si el periodo ya terminó y nada continúa, se usa el past simple: I lived in Rome for two years, then I moved. Esa diferencia se explica en otro tema.
Consejo
Si cuentas, for; si nombras el inicio, since.

Preguntas y respuestas
¿Cuál es la diferencia entre for y since?
For + periodo (for two weeks) dice cuánto dura algo, y since + inicio (since May) dice desde cuándo.
¿Por qué no se dice «I live here since 2019»?
I have lived here since 2019.
For three years: I have worked here for three years. No se usa since con un periodo.
¿Qué tiempo va después de since?
I haven't seen him for two years. La negativa del present perfect con for o since (since May) dice que algo no ha ocurrido hasta ahora.
