Phrasal verbs separables: turn it on, look after it

En un phrasal verb separable, el complemento con un sustantivo va antes o después de la partícula: **turn on the light** y **turn the light on**. El pronombre va solo en medio: **turn it on**, nunca «turn on it».

B1 Oraciones complejas ·

La regla principal

Con un sustantivo: turn on the light o turn the light on, las dos son correctas. Con un pronombre personal (me, you, him, her, it, us, them): solo entre el verbo y la partícula, turn it on, pick them up. Los verbos con preposición (look after, look for) nunca se separan: el complemento va después de todo el verbo, look after it.

Verbos separables

turn onturn on the radio / turn the radio onturn it on
turn offturn off the oven / turn the oven offturn it off
put onput on your boots / put your boots onput them on
take offtake off your hat / take your hat offtake it off
pick uppick up the twins / pick the twins uppick them up
fill infill in the form / fill the form infill it in
wake upwake up the baby / wake the baby upwake her up

Verbos inseparables

VerboCon sustantivoCon pronombre
look afterlook after my auntlook after her
look forlook for the keyslook for them
get on withget on with my bossget on with him
run out ofrun out of milkrun out of it
look forward tolook forward to the triplook forward to it

Pronombres y complementos largos

Los pronombres de objeto son me, you, him, her, it, us, them. Elige según lo que sustituyes: una chaqueta es it (try it on), unos zapatos son them (try them on), una hermana es her (pick her up). Si el complemento es largo, por ejemplo un sustantivo con una oración de relativo, normalmente va después de la partícula: Fill in the form that the receptionist gave you. Partirlo, fill the form that the receptionist gave you in, suena torpe.

Verbos sin complemento

Algunos phrasal verbs no llevan complemento: get up, grow up, set off, come back. No hay nada en medio: We set off at six. El verbo wake up se usa de las dos maneras: I woke up at six (sin complemento) y The noise woke me up (con complemento, el pronombre en medio).

Cómo saber si un verbo se separa

No hay una regla segura, así que consulta el diccionario: allí verás turn sth on, pero look after sb. Como orientación, las partículas on, off, up, down, away, back, in normalmente permiten separar el verbo, y after y for normalmente no, porque son preposiciones.

Si solo suena natural look after it, la partícula no se separa.

  • Turn off it, please. Turn it off, please. el pronombre va entre el verbo y la partícula.
  • I will it pick up at six. I will pick it up at six. el pronombre no va antes del verbo, como «lo recojo».
  • Give back it to me. Give it back to me. con «devolver» sigue valiendo give it back.
  • Throw away them, please. Throw them away, please. «tirarlos» se dice throw them away.
  • Can I try on it? Can I try it on? «probarse» pide el pronombre en medio.
  • Write down it, please. Write it down, please. no existe «down it».
  • She looks it after every day. She looks after it every day. look after no se separa.
  • I looked them for everywhere. I looked for them everywhere. look for tampoco se separa.

Preguntas y respuestas

¿Qué son los phrasal verbs separables?

Son phrasal verbs cuyo complemento puede ir entre el verbo y la partícula: turn the light on. También admiten turn on the light, y las dos formas son correctas.

¿Turn it on o turn on it?

Solo turn it on. Igual: pick them up, wake me up, take it off.

Si no lo es, como look after, después de todo el verbo: look after it.

¿Look after it o look it after?

Solo look after it. El verbo look after no se separa, así que el complemento, sustantivo o pronombre, va detrás: look after the baby, look after her.

Mira el diccionario: turn sth on es separable, look after sb no. Las partículas on, off, up, down, away, back, in normalmente se separan, y after y for normalmente no.
