La regla
Tras Do you know, Could you tell me, I wonder o I don't know, la pregunta se convierte en una afirmación: palabra interrogativa + sujeto + verbo. Los auxiliares do / does / did desaparecen y el verbo recupera su forma normal: What time does the museum open? -> Could you tell me what time the museum opens? Si no hay palabra interrogativa, usamos if o whether.
Pregunta directa y pregunta indirecta
| Pregunta directa | Pregunta indirecta | Qué cambia |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the station? | Do you know where the station is? | be va detrás del sujeto |
| What time does the museum open? | Could you tell me what time the museum opens? | no hay does, vuelve la -s |
| Where did she go? | I don't know where she went. | no hay did, forma de pasado |
| Where can I buy a ticket? | Do you know where I can buy a ticket? | can va detrás del sujeto |
| When will the train arrive? | I wonder when the train will arrive. | will va detrás del sujeto |
| Is the bank open? | Do you know if the bank is open? | if + orden de afirmación |
| Does Tom like jazz? | I wonder whether Tom likes jazz.
Por eso es fácil copiar ese orden y decir Do you know where is the station? o Could you tell me what time opens the museum? Y quien ya domina el do / does de las preguntas inglesas tiende a añadirlo también aquí: Could you tell me what time does the museum open? Otras diferencias: en inglés no hay ¿ ni ? cuando la frase empieza con I wonder o I don't know (en inglés, «Me pregunto dónde vive» es I wonder where he lives.), y «si» se traduce por if o whether.
Ejemplos
- Could you tell me where the pharmacy is? ¿Podrías decirme dónde está la farmacia?
- Do you know how much this jacket costs? ¿Sabes cuánto cuesta esta chaqueta?
- I wonder how old she is. Me pregunto cuántos años tiene.
- Anna doesn't know where Tom lives. Anna no sabe dónde vive Tom.
- Can you tell me why the lesson started late?
- Do you have any idea when the shop closes?
- I'm not sure how long they have lived here. No estoy segura de cuánto tiempo llevan viviendo aquí.
- I'd like to know whether the museum is open on Monday. Me gustaría saber si el museo abre el lunes.
Para qué sirven
Una pregunta indirecta suele sonar más cortés y suave: Could you tell me where the bank is? resulta más amable que Where is the bank? La misma estructura sirve cuando eres tú quien no sabe algo: I don't know where she lives, I'm not sure when it starts.
El orden de las palabras
Tras la palabra interrogativa va el sujeto y después el verbo: where + the station + is. Si la pregunta directa tenía be, can, will o have, ese verbo simplemente pasa detrás del sujeto: When will the train arrive? -> I wonder when the train will arrive. How long have they lived here? -> Do you know how long they have lived here? Igual con be going to: I'm not sure when they are going to arrive.
Do, does y did desaparecen
Where do they live? -> Do you know where they live? What time does the museum open? -> what time the museum opens: vuelve la -s. Where did she go? -> I don't know where she went: vuelve la forma de pasado.
If y whether en preguntas de sí o no
Si no hay palabra interrogativa, usamos if o whether: Do you know if the bank is open? I wonder whether Tom likes jazz. Ojo: este if no es el condicional, así que will es normal: I wonder if it will rain tomorrow. «No sé si vendrá» es I don't know if he will come.
Preguntas sobre el sujeto
Cuando la palabra interrogativa es el sujeto (who, what, which + sustantivo), el orden no cambia, porque tampoco cambiaba en la pregunta directa: Who called? -> Do you know who called? What happened? -> I don't know what happened. Which bus goes to the centre? -> Could you tell me which bus goes to the centre?
Do you know where she lives? Tras I wonder, I don't know o I'm not sure va un punto: I wonder where she lives.
He asked if I liked coffee. They wanted to know when the shop opened.
Truco
Convierte primero la pregunta en una respuesta: Where is the station? -> The station is near the park. Ahora añade el comienzo: Do you know where the station is?
Errores típicos
Do you know where is the station?Do you know where the station is? sujeto primero, luego beCould you tell me what time opens the museum?Could you tell me what time the museum opens? el sujeto va antes del verboI don't know what time is it.I don't know what time it is. en inglés no se invierteCould you tell me what time does the museum open?Could you tell me what time the museum opens? sin does; vuelve la -sI wonder where did she go.I wonder where she went. sin did; forma de pasadoI wonder where he lives?I wonder where he lives. tras I wonder va punto, no signo de interrogaciónCould you tell me where can I buy a ticket?Could you tell me where I can buy a ticket? can va detrás del sujetoShe asked me that where I lived. She asked me where I lived. no se usa that antes de where
Preguntas frecuentes
Empieza con Do you know, Could you tell me o I wonder, añade la palabra interrogativa y luego sujeto y verbo, como en una afirmación. No se usan do / does / did: Could you tell me where she works?
¿Do you know where is o where it is?
La forma correcta es where it is, con el sujeto antes de be: Do you know where the station is? Where is the station? solo se usa como pregunta directa.
Tras Could you tell me la pregunta pasa a ser afirmación: Could you tell me what time it is? No se añade do ni does. Could suele sonar más cortés que Can.
