Un club ferroviario descubre quién diseñó Flying Scotsman, dónde se construyó y por qué fue importante su velocidad acreditada en 1934.
The locomotive is Flying Scotsman. It entered service for the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923. Our teacher asks, "Do you know when it entered service?" Ben checks the date and asks, "Can you remember which company used it?"
Next, we look at the people behind the machine. Sir Nigel Gresley designed Flying Scotsman. I ask, "Do you know who designed the locomotive?" Maya smiles because the answer is now clear.
Workers built Flying Scotsman at Doncaster Works. Our teacher asks, "Can you tell us where workers built it?" Ben looks at a map and wonders whether Doncaster is far from our town.
Then the teacher writes 1934 on the board. She asks, "Do you know what happened in 1934?" We do not know, so she gives us a clue: speed. I ask, "Can you tell us how fast the locomotive went?"
In 1934, Flying Scotsman reached an authenticated speed of 100 miles per hour. It became the first steam locomotive officially recorded at that speed. Maya asks, "Do you know why the record mattered?" The answer is in the two facts on the board.
Before the club ends, we make a short quiz. Ben writes, "Do you know where workers built Flying Scotsman?" I write, "Can you tell me who designed it?" Maya writes, "Do you remember when it entered service?"
Indirect questions keep statement word order after the opening phrase. We say, "Do you know where workers built it?" We do not say, "Do you know where did workers build it?"
Do you know which fact you will remember tomorrow? Can you tell someone why 1934 matters? Do you know where you can find more information about Flying Scotsman?
