La regla principal
Condicional cero (hechos, costumbres): if / when + presente, presente. Primer condicional (un futuro posible y concreto): if + presente, will / won't + verbo. Después de if y when no se usa will: el futuro lo marca solo la oración principal.
Formas
| Tipo | Cláusula con if | Oración principal | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|---|
| cero | if / when + presente | presente | If Tom misses the bus, he walks. |
| primero | if + presente | will + verbo | If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home. |
| primero, negativa | if + don't / doesn't | won't + verbo | If you don't call, I won't wait. |
| primero, pregunta | if + presente | What will you do? / Will you ...? | If it rains, will you stay at home? |
| unless | unless + verbo afirmativo | will + verbo | Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus. |
When you arrive, call me. Unless you hurry... Nunca *When you will arrive, aunque el subjuntivo nos suene a futuro. Por la misma razón no se dice *If it will rain (por analogía con «va a llover»).
Ejemplos

- If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home. Si llueve mañana, nos quedaremos en casa.
- If you don't hurry, you will miss the train. Si no te das prisa, perderás el tren.
- I will text you when the train arrives. Te escribiré cuando llegue el tren.
- If you see Olena, tell her about the party.
- If the shop closes early, we might go to the market.
- Unless it rains, we will eat in the garden.
Condicional cero: hechos y costumbres
If Tom misses the bus, he walks. Aquí valen if y when: When it snows, the school closes. Lo habitual es el presente también en la oración principal, aunque en afirmaciones generales a veces se oye will (If you leave milk in the sun, it will go bad).
Esquema: if + presente, will / won't + verbo. If she doesn't come, we will start without her. La oración principal tampoco tiene que llevar siempre will: puede llevar might, can o un imperativo. If it rains, we might stay at home. If you see Olena, tell her.
Después de if y when, sin will
La regla es la misma para if y when: When I get home, I will call you. Así funcionan también as soon as, before y after. Existe un uso raro, If you will wait here, I will get the manager, que es una petición cortés, pero no es para este nivel.
Unless significa if ... not
Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus equivale a If you don't hurry, you will miss the bus. En frases de sentimiento normalmente no se usa: I will be sad if you don't come.
Orden de las cláusulas y la coma
Si la cláusula con if va primero, se pone una coma después: If you hurry, you will catch the train. Si va al final, no hay coma: You will catch the train if you hurry.
Preguntas
En la pregunta, will va antes del sujeto y la cláusula con if sigue en presente: What will you do if Anna doesn't come? o If it rains, will you stay at home? Respuesta corta: Yes, I will. / No, I won't.
Consejo
Piensa así: when para lo que va a ocurrir seguro, if para lo que puede ocurrir. When I get home, I will call you (seguro que llego). If I get home early, I will call you (quizás llegue pronto). Para hechos y costumbres valen los dos.

Preguntas frecuentes
Unless significa «a menos que» o «salvo que», y equivale a if ... not. El verbo va en afirmativo: Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus. No digas *Unless you don't hurry.
Sí, y es obligatorio: When I get home, I will call you. Corresponde a «cuando llegue» en español, y nunca se dice *When I will get home.
Después de la cláusula con if cuando va al principio: If you hurry, you will catch the train. Si va al final no hay coma: You will catch the train if you hurry.
