Grandmother recipes: for/since (B1)

Inside a stained notebook I found instructions my grandmother wrote decades ago. Margins have listed times and temperatures beside recipes our family has cooked since I was small.

The soup recipe notes that broth should simmer for forty minutes after vegetables soften. Grandmother has written that she has prepared it every Sunday since 1974 when she moved into her first house with a large stove.

Bread instructions mention kneading for ten minutes until dough feels elastic. Aunt Rosa has followed those steps since she inherited the notebook in 2005, and she has taught cousins during holidays since then.

Pickled vegetables require jars to rest for three weeks before opening. My mother has stored batches in the pantry since summer 2019, and we have opened the last jar during last month's dinner.

Handwritten tips mix past habits with ongoing traditions. Grandmother visited markets on Saturdays she has described vividly, yet we have ordered organic boxes online since the pandemic made trips difficult for her.

I tried the apple cake yesterday using measurements she recorded in cups rather than grams. It rose well, though I have baked it only twice since finding the page last week.

Family gatherings have centred on these dishes for generations. Photos show tables we have shared since the nineteen eighties, and children who have learned stirring and tasting since they could stand on chairs.

Cooking connects timelines. Duration expressed with for and origins expressed with since appear naturally beside memories of people who have passed but whose instructions have remained useful.

I photocopied the notebook yesterday and sent pages to relatives abroad. They have thanked me because flavours they have missed for years might return to kitchens that have waited since grandmother's last visit.
