The café on Mill Street was half empty when Ana arrived with wet hair from drizzle. I waved from a corner table. We had not seen each other since June, and the hug lasted longer than polite custom suggests.

Ana ordered tea. I chose coffee. She said, "You have changed your haircut." I replied, "I cut it in July before camp. Have you been well since we last met?"

She has worked at the hospital all summer, mostly night shifts. Last month she transferred to a day ward, and sleep improved. In June she felt exhausted every morning. Since August she has cooked dinner at home again instead of buying sandwiches.

I told her about my road trip in July. I drove to the coast with two cousins. We camped near cliffs and we watched stars without city glare. I have camped often as a child, but I had not slept in a tent for years until that week.

"Have you ever seen bioluminescent plankton?" she asked. I said no. She saw glowing water in Croatia in 2021 during a night swim. Since that holiday she has checked marine calendars for repeat chances. Last week she found a cheap flight advert but has not booked yet.

We talked about relationships. Ana ended a long partnership in May. She has lived alone since then in a smaller flat near the park. Last weekend she joined a pottery class and met friendly people. She laughed and said she has thrown three lopsided bowls so far.

I started guitar lessons in September. My teacher has corrected my posture every session. Last Tuesday I played a simple melody without stopping. Progress feels slow, yet I have enjoyed practice on rainy evenings.

The conversation moved to family. Ana's brother graduated in 2020 during lockdown ceremonies online. He has worked abroad since 2022 in Dublin. She visited him last Easter. I met him once at a barbecue in 2019 before he left.

Rain stopped. We walked to the bookshop next door. Ana bought a novel she has wanted since spring. I bought a travel guide I saw yesterday in the window. At the door she said, "Let's not wait four months again." I agreed. We have already picked a date in two weeks.

Old friends mix tenses easily because shared history contains fixed years and ongoing change. Past simple recalls the barbecue in 2019 and the breakup in May. Present perfect carries recovery since August, bowls she has thrown, lessons I have enjoyed. Both describe the same friendship from different time angles.
