I am Elena. Last Friday I invited four friends for dinner at seven, but only two arrived on time. The others showed up late, and our evening turned into a lesson in patience and casual phrasal verbs.
I woke up early that day and wrote down a shopping list. At the market I picked up vegetables, bread, and cheese. On the way home I dropped off dry cleaning and stopped to fill up petrol because I did not want to run out later.
Back in the kitchen I cleaned up counters and set the table. I turned on the oven and put on a playlist softly. Ana came over first and helped me chop herbs. She hung up her coat and asked whether she could lend a hand with dessert.
Marco and Sofia were supposed to arrive at seven. They rang up at seven fifteen to say traffic had slowed them down near the bridge. I told them to take their time and that we would keep the soup warm. Ana joked that guests always show up late when food smells good.
At seven forty Marco and Sofia finally came in, apologising as they took off their jackets. They sat down and explained that their taxi had broken down briefly before the driver got it going again. We poured wine and decided to carry on without stress.
Leo and Nina were still missing. I sent a message asking them to check in when they were close. Nina wrote back that they had gone out late from work and were rushing over now. Leo added that they would pick up flowers on the way to make up for the delay.
While we waited, Ana and Marco hung out in the living room. Sofia helped me finish off the main dish and pointed out that the sauce needed one more minute. I turned down the heat and stirred carefully so nothing would burn.
At eight twenty Leo and Nina showed up with roses and warm smiles. They came in laughing about missing the train and having to get off one stop early. Nina put the flowers in water while Leo sat down and admitted they should have left the office sooner.
We ate slowly and talked about busy weeks. Marco told a story about a colleague who always dozes off in meetings. Sofia said her flatmate never cleaned up after cooking, which led to a funny debate about shared kitchens.
After dinner we cleared the table and put away leftovers. Leo offered to wash plates while Nina made tea. Ana turned off the music and suggested we play a board game. Everyone agreed, so we moved chairs and settled down in the living room.
Later Marco and Sofia had to head off because they planned to catch an early train. We walked them to the door and thanked them for coming. Leo and Nina stayed up chatting until midnight, helping me tidy up before they left.
The evening reminded me that plans change.
