I am Sofia. Every Thursday I go to a language exchange at the community centre, and last month I finally started to get along with a regular group that meets near the back table. Our conversations naturally include many phrasal verbs.

When I walked in early, Nina waved me over and asked me to sit down. She introduced me to Marco, who had just moved in from Milan. Marco seemed shy at first, but he warmed up after we spoke about music and travel.

We took turns asking questions. Nina wanted to find out where Marco worked, and he explained that he had taken up a role in marketing. I pointed out that the centre offered free conversation cards, and Marco picked up a set from the shelf.

During the break we hung out by the window with coffee. A participant named Leo spoke up about pronunciation drills. He suggested we pair off and read short dialogues aloud. Marco and I joined in and tried to keep up with the faster speakers.

Sometimes people mix up similar verbs, and we laughed kindly when someone said "turn off" instead of "turn up" the volume. Ana wrote down tricky pairs on a whiteboard so everyone could photograph the list.

After the session Marco and I agreed to meet again. We exchanged numbers and promised to check in before the next event. He said he hoped to get over his nervousness about speaking, and I told him practice would help.

On the way home I thought about how social learning works. You show up regularly, sit down with strangers, speak up when you can, and slowly get along with people who share your goals. Phrasal verbs appear in every friendly instruction and invitation.

The following week Marco brought homemade cookies to share. We stayed up talking after the official end time, and several members decided to set up a weekend walk. Language exchanges work best when people carry on meeting outside the classroom.
