Airport check-in: phrasal verbs (B1)

I am Lena. My family flew to Athens last month, and I handled online check-in for four passengers. The process seemed simple, but small tasks piled up, and phrasal verbs appeared in every instruction on the airline website.

The night before departure I logged in to our booking and filled in passport details for each traveller. The site asked us to pick out seats and add one checked bag. I double-checked spelling because mistakes can slow you down at the airport.

When payment for the extra bag went through, the system sent a confirmation email. I printed boarding passes and told everyone to pack up hand luggage before bed. My brother tried to throw in extra shoes, but I said he should leave them out to save weight.

In the morning we set off early because roadworks might hold up traffic. Dad dropped us at the terminal while he returned the hire car. At the entrance we joined a queue to drop off the suitcase at the self-service kiosk.

Inside, we followed signs to security. Mum asked me to take out laptops and liquids from bags. We moved through quickly, then sat down near the gate and ate breakfast. My sister looked up whether our gate had changed and found out it had moved to the far pier.

We boarded on time, stowed bags overhead, and settled down for the flight. During take-off I watched clouds and thought about how travel involves dozens of short actions expressed with phrasal verbs. You check in, pack up, set off, drop off luggage, take out devices, and finally take off into the sky.

After landing we picked up bags, went through customs, and caught a taxi to the hotel. The receptionist asked us to fill in registration cards, and we checked in at the desk before heading up to our rooms.

Organising a trip teaches practical English. Airlines tell you to log in early, airports ask you to take out liquids, and families remind each other to pack up on time. Each phrasal verb names a real step in the journey.
