I am Renee. On Monday I moved to a desk near the window, and IT asked me to set everything up before the team meeting at noon.

First I took my old keyboard out of a box and took it out carefully. I plugged the keyboard in and plugged it in, then I switched the monitor on and switched it on. The screen flickered once, so I unplugged the cable and plugged it in again.

My colleague Omar helped me hang a calendar up on the partition and hang it up straight. He told me to wipe the desk surface off because the previous worker left coffee rings. I wiped the rings off with spray and wiped them off until the wood looked clean.

We picked the chair up slightly and picked it up to adjust the wheels. Omar showed me how to turn the height dial on and turn it on by lifting a lever. When the chair felt right, I sat down and put my notebook down beside the laptop and put it down within reach.

IT sent a link for software access. I looked the instructions up and looked them up before clicking anything. The guide said to fill a security form in first and fill it in with my employee number. I wrote the number down from my badge and wrote it down without mistakes.

At lunch I took my lunch out of the bag and took it out, eating while I sorted cables. I tied loose wires up with a velcro strip and tied them up so nobody would trip. I threw old packaging away in the recycling bin and threw it away after flattening the cardboard.

Before the meeting I set the video app up on the screen and set it up for a test call. I turned the camera on and turned it on, then I switched the microphone off to check the icon. Everything worked, so I switched the mic on again and switched it on for real.

My manager stopped by and asked me to hand a signed policy sheet in by Friday and hand it in to HR. I picked the sheet up from her hand and picked it up, promising to read it tonight.

By afternoon the desk finally felt like mine. Each separable verb marked a step: plug it in, wipe it off, fill it in, set it up. The office hummed around me, and the new space already seemed ready for work.
