Teacher: Welcome, everyone. Today we will run mock interviews in pairs. Before we start, please switch your phones off or switch them off silent.

Student A: Should we record the session?

Teacher: You may switch recording on if your partner agrees. Switch it on only after you ask permission.

Student B: I am ready. I picked my question cards up from your desk and picked them up already.

Teacher: Good. Remember to look unfamiliar words up during preparation if you need to, but look them up quickly so you do not lose time.

Student A: When the interview ends, do we hand the score sheet in to you?

Teacher: Yes, hand it in before you leave. Fill the rubric in with honest notes and fill it in for both speakers.

The room buzzes. In our corner I sit across from Mei. She asks where I see myself in five years, and I answer as clearly as I can. Between questions I wipe nervous sweat off my palms and wipe it off discreetly on my trousers.

Mei tells me to slow down when I rush. I take a breath in and let it out, then I pick the next card up and pick it up. The prompt says to describe a challenge at work. I explain how I once had to set a new filing system up and set it up in two days.

During feedback our teacher walks by. She asks us to write two strengths down and write them down on the sheet. I write that I kept eye contact and that I turned difficult questions back to my experience without panic.

Mei says I should hang filler words up like old coats and hang them up outside the room. We laugh, yet her image helps. Before the bell, I plug my USB stick in to save the audio and plug it in, then I switch the laptop off and switch it off.

At the door the teacher reminds us to throw draft notes away and throw them away before the next group enters. Practice interviews feel artificial, yet they train real habits. Separable verbs appear in instructions, in nerves, and in advice: switch them off, look them up, hand it in, set it up.
