At home I packed slowly. I picked my suit up from the dry cleaner's and picked it up in a zip bag. I hung the suit up in the wardrobe overnight and hung it up so wrinkles would fall out. In the morning I took shoes out of their box and took them out, polishing them while coffee brewed.
Before leaving I switched the flat alarm on and switched it on, then I locked the door and took the rubbish out to the landing bin. I took it out early because collection day was today. My neighbour asked me to pick a package up for her and pick it up when I returned on Sunday. I wrote her flat number down on my phone and wrote it down in the notes app.
At the station I looked the platform up on the departures board and looked it up while crowds pushed past. I filled my water bottle up at a fountain and filled it up before boarding. On the train I plugged my charger in and plugged it in, then I switched the laptop on to finish a slides deck and switched it on for twenty minutes.
A ticket inspector asked me to take my ticket out and take it out from my wallet. I did, and he moved on. Later I wiped crumbs off the table and wiped them off with a napkin from the cafe car.
In Edinburgh my friend picked me up outside the station and picked me up in a borrowed car. We drove to the hotel, where reception asked us to fill registration cards in and fill them in at the desk. I handed my passport over and handed it over for copying.
Before the rehearsal dinner I took my tie off in the room and took it off to rest my neck. I put a casual shirt on instead and put it on for a walk along the canal. Evening rain started, so we turned our collars up against the wind, not a phrasal verb lesson, yet another small adjustment.
The wedding was joyful. After midnight I switched my phone off and switched it off to save battery. Travel days mix excitement and logistics, and separable verbs name many logistics cleanly: pick it up, fill them in, plug it in, take it out. By the time the train home leaves, I expect those forms to sound completely ordinary.
