Film debate: discourse markers (B1)

The credits rolled and we walked out into cold air. Four of us had watched the new drama at the corner cinema. Opinions surfaced quickly; however, nobody shouted. Therefore the discussion stayed friendly on the pavement.

Leo praised the lead actor. He said every glance felt honest; moreover, the final scene stayed with him for hours. In contrast, Priya found the plot predictable. Although acting was strong, she guessed the twist early.

I sat between their views. The cinematography impressed me; therefore I remembered light more than dialogue. Nevertheless, pacing dragged in the middle hour. Furthermore, side characters deserved more lines.

We entered a café to continue. Hot chocolate warmed our hands; however, the noise made listening harder. Consequently, we switched to shorter sentences and clearer signals. On the other hand, writing quick notes on napkins helped us track points.

Budget came up indirectly. Tickets cost more this year; therefore we chose matinee seats. Although streaming waits months, shared reactions in a full room feel different. Moreover, supporting local cinemas keeps one screen in our neighbourhood.

Music sparked debate again. The soundtrack mixed jazz and silence; nevertheless, Leo wanted louder cues during tension. Priya preferred quiet moments; as a result, she noticed ambient street sounds the director hid under dialogue.

Before leaving we rated the film privately on our phones. Scores differed; however, we agreed to recommend it with warnings about slow scenes. In addition, we planned a lighter comedy next week to balance mood.

Walking home I thought about how debate works. Speakers linked claims with although, therefore, and in contrast without formal training. Although the film divided us, connectors kept respect intact. In conclusion, discourse markers turn disagreement into conversation rather than conflict.
