Interviewer: Thank you for speaking with us. You coordinated volunteers at the coastal cleanup for five years. What would you have done differently if funding had been stable throughout that period?

Coordinator: I would have hired a part-time administrator sooner. Applications were processed manually, schedules were emailed individually, and mistakes were made when inboxes overflowed. If a database had been implemented in the first year, hours would have been tracked automatically.

Interviewer: Volunteers often asked whether equipment would be provided on site. How were those questions handled?

Coordinator: We told them that gloves, bags, and pickers would be distributed at registration. Donations were collected from hardware stores, inventories were checked each morning, and shortages were reported to sponsors. When supplies ran low, runs were made to backup storage.

Interviewer: Were safety briefings mandatory?

Coordinator: Yes. Participants were instructed to wear closed shoes and not to pick up sharp objects without notifying a team leader. Briefings were translated when international groups joined, and signs were posted near dunes where erosion had been observed.

Interviewer: If weather warnings had been taken more seriously in 2022, would the event have proceeded as planned?

Coordinator: Probably not. Storms were forecast, yet organisers hoped conditions would improve. Had we cancelled earlier, volunteers would not have travelled long distances unnecessarily. Instead, the start was delayed, tents were damaged, and morale suffered.

Interviewer: Local media wondered whether recycling targets had been met. Were they?

Coordinator: Partially. Plastic was separated, metals were weighed, and data were sent to the municipal office. Some bags were contaminated because sorting instructions were not followed. We were asked to redesign labels before the next campaign.

Interviewer: What did sponsors request?

Coordinator: They wanted photographs, social media mentions, and summaries showing impact. Reports were drafted, metrics were verified, and presentations were delivered at quarterly meetings. One sponsor asked us not to associate their brand with political statements that had appeared on unofficial banners.

Interviewer: If you were advising a new coordinator, what would you emphasise?

Coordinator: Clarity. Roles should be assigned before arrival, communication channels should be tested, and contingency plans should be written for common problems. Mixed teams work well when expectations are shared early.

Interviewer: Did officials report what residents had asked about access?

Coordinator: Yes. Parking was limited, shuttle routes were proposed, and permits were obtained for road closures. Residents were told that noise would be minimised and that beaches would reopen by evening.

Interviewer: Looking back, what achievements are you proud of?

Coordinator: Tonnes of waste were removed, habitats were protected, and school groups were engaged. Partnerships were formed that continue today. If those relationships had not been nurtured, the programme would have ended when my term concluded.

Interviewer: Thank you for sharing these insights.

Coordinator: I hope future teams learn from what was done well and from what could have been improved when resources and weather were unpredictable.
