Journalist: Thank you for speaking with us, Ms Ortega. Your design for the community library was chosen last year after many proposals were submitted by firms across the country. How did you feel when the news was announced by the selection panel?

Architect: I was relieved because our team had worked late for months. Initial sketches had been rejected by the client twice, and revisions had been requested by advisers who wanted more natural light in the reading rooms. When the final concept was accepted, champagne was opened by my colleagues in the studio, though I was exhausted.

Journalist: The site had been used as a warehouse before the council bought it. What challenges were created by that history?

Architect: Contamination had been reported by environmental surveys conducted in 2018. Soil had to be treated by specialists before foundations could be poured by the construction company. Old foundations had been uncovered by diggers, and unexpected pipes had to be removed by utility workers who were called at short notice.

Journalist: Your renderings show a green roof that has been praised by local residents. Was that feature planned from the start?

Architect: Not exactly. The idea was suggested by a student group during a public forum, and it was adopted by us after engineers confirmed that weight limits could be met by reinforced beams. Plants have since been selected by horticulturists who chose species that require little water. Insulation benefits have been measured by consultants, and energy savings have been projected by modellers who used data from similar buildings in Scandinavia.

Journalist: Were any heritage rules applied because the neighbourhood is protected?

Architect: Yes. Facade materials had to be approved by conservation officers who insisted that brick tones match nearby terraces. Windows on the street side were scaled by planners so that proportions would be respected by passers-by. Modern glass extensions at the rear were permitted because they could not be seen from the main road and because light was needed by interior study areas.

Journalist: Funding was partly raised by a crowdfunding campaign. How was that money used?

Architect: It was spent on furniture that was crafted by local makers and on art installations that were commissioned by emerging sculptors. Donors were thanked by name on a plaque that was mounted in the entrance hall. Additional pledges were collected by volunteers who organised bake sales and concerts.
