Our team returned from the coastal research trip with notebooks full of measurements and memory cards full of wave footage. I was asked to report back to the department on Monday morning, summarising findings without drowning colleagues in technical detail.

The expedition aimed to compare erosion rates at three bays affected differently by harbour construction. What we observed during the second week was accelerated retreat near the eastern breakwater, confirming hypotheses discussed before departure but never tested in winter conditions.

It was Dr Lin who insisted we remain an extra day when instruments recorded an unusual storm surge. That decision proved valuable, because it was that surge that revealed how sediment transport diverged from existing models. Her caution protected the integrity of our dataset.

Students worked in pairs, rotating between drone mapping and shoreline profiling. All they needed for efficient collaboration was clear hand signals and shared checklists laminated against salt spray. The thing that impressed me most was their ability to troubleshoot connectivity failures without panic.

Local fishers contributed observations passed down informally for generations. The reason why their input mattered was timing: they noticed channel shifts years before satellite imagery highlighted them. Integrating qualitative testimony with quantitative charts strengthened the final report.

Evenings in the field station involved long discussions about policy implications. Jonas argued that it is long-term monitoring that justifies funding, not single dramatic snapshots. Elena added that what policymakers often want is concise language linking data to community risk.

When presenting slides, I avoided jargon where possible. What I emphasised was practical recommendation: relocate maintenance equipment from the lower car park before autumn equinox tides. It is that car park that floods first, according to both our sensors and residents who have sandbagged there repeatedly.

Questions from the audience focused on budget for repeat surveys. I answered honestly that the reason why continuity remains uncertain is competing grants, not lack of scientific merit. What I promised was a joint letter with coastal engineers urging prioritisation in the next municipal cycle.

Walking home after the seminar, I felt tired but satisfied. The place where science meets daily life is exactly these vulnerable shorelines where numbers describe homes and livelihoods. It is responsibility that follows such research, and it is responsibility I hope our department continues to model for students who accompany us on future trips.

Preparation began months before departure when Dr Lin secured permits for drone flights near protected nesting areas. What permits required was environmental impact statements reviewed by a panel unfamiliar with our instruments. It was patience during review that delayed deployment yet prevented legal complications mid-study.

It is tidal calibration that graduate students practiced repeatedly in the laboratory wave tank. What the tank simulates imperfectly is chaotic overlap of wind-driven chop and refraction around rocky outcrops. The place where simulation meets limitation is exactly why field seasons remain indispensable despite advances in modelling software.

What local councils requested after preliminary results was plain-language summaries suitable for town hall presentations.
