Aris Thorne kept his fingers poised over the tracking console at the mountain observatory , watching the orbital trajectory refresh in pulses of harsh crimson . On the telemetry display , an abandoned weather satellite launched in the final years of the Cold War was closing on an active communications platform at seven kilometers per second . The predicted point of closest approach had shrunk to less than forty meters , well inside the threshold for an emergency collision - avoidance burn . Yet the corporate operator responsible for the platform had not answered the priority radio dispatch . Down in the sleeping valley below , ordinary observers look up and see a serene , infinite void . We console ourselves with the poetic illusion that space is fundamentally boundless , an untouchable expanse immune to terrestrial squalor . Yet can we truly call an environment infinite when every useful orbital altitude is now haunted by our discarded machinery ? Low Earth orbit is not a romantic wilderness ; it is a precarious , hypervelocity scrapyard , where hundreds of thousands of metallic fragments circle the planet like unexploded ordnance . The physics of orbital debris are notoriously unforgiving . At seven kilometers per second , an ordinary fleck of peeling paint possesses the kinetic punch of an industrial bowling ball . A loose bolt does not merely dent a solar array ; it vaporizes aluminum casing , generating a shotgun blast of secondary shrapnel that ricochets across adjoining trajectories . This cascading chain reaction , long feared by astronomers , ceases to be a theoretical catastrophe when one surveys the sheer density of commercial mega - constellations deployed over the past decade . Private enterprises celebrate the democratization of connectivity while quietly externalizing the catastrophic cost of orbital waste management . What is particularly galling about this aerial congestion is the utter paralysis of international governance . The foundational treaties governing outer space were drafted when only superpowers possessed launch capabilities , assuming goodwill and scientific camaraderie . Today , national regulatory bodies operate as passive spectators , approving thousands of private satellite launches while imposing virtually no binding obligations for post - mission disposal . Aerospace corporations promise to de - orbit their hardware after five or ten years , yet when an onboard thruster freezes or an electrical bus burns out , the dead chassis simply drifts for centuries with impunity . " Collision threshold cleared , " his shift partner muttered from the communications desk , pointing to a sudden deflection in the satellite's vector . " They executed the maneuver with six minutes to spare . " Aris let out a long breath , but the relief was undeniably hollow . One close pass had been averted by a desperate last - minute burn , consuming propellant that the platform would need for routine maintenance later in its operational life . Meanwhile , the derelict rocket body that had prompted the alert continued its blind , tumbling circuit around the globe , entirely oblivious to the panic it had triggered .
