In December 1959 , twelve nations gathered in Washington to sign the Antarctic Treaty , establishing the world's first major nuclear - free and demilitarized international territory . Negotiating across intense Cold War ideological divisions , diplomats from the United States , the Soviet Union , the United Kingdom , and nine other signatory states had to reconcile competing territorial claims with scientific cooperation . The treaty's success hinged on drafting language that was legally airtight yet syntactically concise . To prevent the legal text from collapsing under endless repetitive qualifiers , the drafting committee relied extensively on elliptical coordination and verbal substitution , crafting articles of remarkable brevity and diplomatic elegance . Elliptical coordination occurs when shared grammatical elements - such as subject nouns , modal auxiliaries , or dependent clauses - are stated once and subsequently omitted in coordinate structures . In Article I of the treaty , the signatories declared that Antarctica shall be used for peaceful purposes only . Rather than repeating the phrase " there shall be prohibited " across multiple subparagraphs , the text established the governing modal once : " there shall be prohibited , inter alia , any measures of a military nature , such as the establishment of military bases , the carrying out of military maneuvers , as well as the testing of any type of weapons . " Through gapping and coordination , the legal obligation applies universally without syntactic clutter . Furthermore , the treaty utilized substitution and ellipsis to navigate sensitive sovereignty disputes . Article IV famously froze all territorial claims without renouncing or validating any nation's previous stance . By employing pro - forms and coordinated omissions , the drafters ensured that no state compromised its sovereign dignity . One delegation agreed to suspend assertion of its claims , and the others did likewise . The substitution " did likewise " preserved the diplomatic balance , avoiding the necessity of spelling out controversial territorial assertions that could have sabotaged the treaty's ratification . The Antarctic Treaty illustrates why ellipsis and substitution are indispensable tools in international statecraft and formal jurisprudence . When drafting complex inter - institutional agreements , redundant language creates dangerous legal ambiguities and invites conflicting interpretations . Concise syntactic coordination sharpens the focus of the agreement , ensuring that rights , prohibitions , and duties remain unmistakably clear across different linguistic and legal traditions . Analyzing the syntactic economy of treaty drafting encourages you to refine how you handle complex coordination in professional writing . When preparing multi - party agreements or organizational policies , how do you use ellipsis to avoid tedious repetition across parallel provisions ? Does streamlined syntactic gapping enhance the clarity and authority of your legal or business documents ? How do you verify that omitted verbs or subjects do not introduce unforeseen loopholes ?
