Lucia Moreau stood on the steel catwalk suspended thirty meters above the experimental fusion pit , watching the digital pressure monitor refuse to drop . At four in the morning , the vast cavern of the facility in southern France was deserted save for the hum of cryogenic compressors and the cold hiss of liquid helium circulating through superconducting coils . The reactor vessel needed to achieve an ultra - high vacuum before the magnetic confinement tests could begin , yet the reading had remained stubbornly fixed at ten to the minus four millibars for two hours . " The vacuum seals ought to have seated completely once the chamber dropped below freezing , " said Étienne , her shift partner , wiping condensation from his protective visor . " If the helium manifold sprung a leak , the spectrometer would flag it instantly . " " It hasn't flagged any trace gas , " Lucia said , tapping the glass casing of the sensor . " Which means atmospheric air is entering from outside . Étienne suspected an instrument calibration fault ; Lucia , a warped gasket on the neutral beam port . " Étienne suggested venting the outer jacket to recalibrate the gauges , but Lucia told him not to . Venting eighteen tons of purified nitrogen would delay the entire international consortium's testing schedule by three weeks , and their director had made it clear that no further postponements would be tolerated . " If we can isolate the north diagnostic ports , we might pinpoint the ingress point , " she said , unclipping an ultrasonic acoustic detector from her harness . " Take the lower manifold sensors ; I will take the upper ones . " Étienne nodded and descended the companionway toward the lower cryogenic lines . Lucia worked her way around the massive toroidal chamber , pressing the listening probe against the insulated steel flanges . The metal was frigid enough that frost formed wherever her breath touched the joints . For forty minutes she heard only the steady resonance of magnetic coolers and the dull vibration of water pumps . Then , near the flange of the second optical port , the detector's headphones crackled with a high - pitched hiss . A copper sealing ring had contracted unevenly under cryogenic cooling , leaving a hair - thin gap where ambient air was being drawn into the void . Lucia signaled Étienne over the radio . He brought up a torque wrench and tightened the perimeter bolts with measured increments until the whistling died away . On the overhead display , the red warning numerals flickered , turned amber , and then settled into green as the pressure plunged into hard vacuum . Lucia leaned back against the safety railing and watched the numbers descend , the artificial star inside the chamber one step closer to ignition .
