Nadia Ross stared at the wall - sized operations monitor as green traffic graphs across Europe and Asia sheared into vertical drops , flattening against zero within forty seconds . It was three in the morning in the primary network control hub , twenty - five thousand enterprise clients were losing connectivity , and the executive bridge line was already blaring with panicked voices demanding to know whether the company had suffered a coordinated state - sponsored cyberattack . Hardly had the automated maintenance window closed when the authoritative name servers vanished from the global routing tables . What alarmed Nadia was not the sudden flood of error alerts , but the absolute silence from the primary Singapore gateway . " Every external query is returning empty responses , " said Dev , her junior systems engineer , his fingers trembling over his keyboard . " The root servers cannot locate our domain records . " Rarely had any engineer in the facility witnessed sixty percent of global traffic evaporate so cleanly . On the executive bridge , directors clamored for a total shutdown of the network perimeters , fearing malware . " Keep the perimeters open , " Nadia commanded into her headset . " It was an automated configuration push that triggered this blackout , not an external intrusion . If an attack had breached our firewalls , the packet logs would show massive outbound transfers ; instead , they show complete inactivity . " Not only had the routine update script introduced a malformed syntax rule into the Border Gateway Protocol filters , but it had also instructed neighboring carriers to withdraw all reachable paths to the firm's data centers . Within two minutes , the entire company had erased itself from the internet . All Nadia needed was low - level console access to a single uncorrupted core router in Frankfurt . " Under no circumstances must anyone attempt a blind system restart , " she warned the floor . " A reboot while the bad configuration resides in memory will lock us out of the serial interfaces permanently . " She opened an emergency out - of - band satellite link , bypassing the disabled public transit pathways . For two agonizing minutes the command terminal hung on an unresponsive prompt while the system negotiated encryption keys . Only when she manually injected a clean routing manifest into the Frankfurt core did the surrounding peer networks begin to recalculate their paths . On the central display , the flatlined graphs flickered , spiked with incoming packets , and climbed steadily toward normal volume . Nadia took off her headset , let her breath out slowly , and reached for a notepad to draft the incident post - mortem .
