La regola principale
It was only when / by / after ... that e It was not until ... that: nella frase dopo that l’ordine delle parole è normale, senza ausiliare davanti al soggetto. Strange though it may seem, Much as I admire him: l’elemento messo in rilievo va per primo, poi seguono soggetto e verbo. So great was the demand that, Such was the noise that: dopo So e Such soggetto e be si invertono. La frase normale (We noticed the silence only when the lights went out.) è sempre corretta; queste forme aggiungono soltanto peso.
La frase scissa con it: only when, only by, not until
Come in italiano («È solo quando ... che»), l’elemento in evidenza sta tra It was e that, e il resto della frase segue that nell’ordine normale: It was only then that I realised, non «It was only then that did I realise». Il verbo dopo who o that concorda con l’elemento in evidenza: It is the parents who are responsible, It was the delays that worried us.
| Struttura | Esempio | Significato |
|---|---|---|
| It was only when ... that | It was only when the lights went out that we noticed the silence. |
| It is only by ... that | It is only by listening that you learn. | Si impara solo ascoltando. |
| It was only after ... that | It was only after the vote that the board explained its reasons. |
| It was not until ... that | It was not until 1998 that the bridge reopened. | Il ponte ha riaperto solo nel 1998. |
| It is precisely / largely because ... that | It is largely because of the drought that prices rose. |
| It is not X but Y that | It was not the cost but the delay that worried us. |
Confronta con il livello B2: Not until midnight did we leave e It was not until midnight that we left sono entrambe corrette e hanno lo stesso significato. Lo stesso vale per Only when she left did I notice e It was only when she left that I noticed. Non devi sceglierne una, ma non puoi mescolarle: non «It was not until midnight did we leave».
Italiano e inglese: dove cambia
In italiano basta dire «solo nel 1998» o «solo quando», senza negazione; l’inglese con until vuole not: «It was until 2010 that the bridge reopened» non esprime «solo nel 2010». It was only when she left that I noticed. Per «per quanto lo ammiri» o «per quanto ci provasse» l’italiano ricorre al congiuntivo, mentre l’inglese non lo usa in questi casi: si anticipa l’elemento, come in Much as I admire him e Try as she might, senza how much. «Tanta fu la richiesta che» e «tale fu il rumore che» si lasciano tradurre quasi parola per parola con So great was the demand that e Such was the noise that, ma il soggetto va dopo be. What: What surprised me was that nobody complained.
What, All, The way e l’ordine inverso
Dopo What + proposizione + be può venire una proposizione con that, il verbo alla forma base (con o senza to) o una coppia «non X, ma Y»: What surprised me was that nobody complained, What we need to do is (to) wait, What matters is not the price but the quality, All he did was (to) shrug. Dopo All non va what: All I asked for was an answer, mentre l’italiano dice «tutto quello che». Per «il modo in cui» si dice The way she handled it was remarkable, senza how. La stessa idea può aprirsi con un dimostrativo: That is what I meant, This is why we left, That was when everything changed, That's how she did it, Honesty is what matters most.
Concessive con anteposizione: though, as, much as
Si porta all’inizio l’aggettivo o l’avverbio e si aggiunge though o as, poi soggetto e verbo: Strange though it may seem e Strange as it may seem significano la stessa cosa («per quanto possa sembrare strano»). Con Much as la concessiva riguarda il verbo: Much as I admire him, I cannot support this plan. Try as she might (anche may) equivale a «per quanto ci provasse».
Si può mettere per primo il complemento oggetto o un complemento predicativo per creare un contrasto: This I cannot accept, That much I know, The first chapter I loved; the second I found dull. Poi l’ordine è normale, soggetto e verbo, senza inversione.
So, Such e comparativi all’inizio
Dopo So + aggettivo il soggetto segue be: So great was the demand that the shop ran out. Dopo So + avverbio serve un ausiliare: So quickly did the tickets sell that .... Dopo Such viene be, che concorda con il sintagma nominale: Such was the noise that we left, Such were the delays that .... Anche i comparativi come More important is the fact that ... o Far more serious were the long-term effects mettono be davanti al soggetto, e be concorda con il soggetto che segue.
| Struttura | Esempio | Significato |
|---|---|---|
| Aggettivo + though / as + soggetto + verbo | Tired as she was, she kept going. | Per quanto fosse stanca, ha continuato. |
| Much as + soggetto + verbo | Much as I admire him, I cannot support this plan. |
| Complemento anteposto | This I cannot accept. | Questo non posso accettarlo. |
| So + aggettivo + be + soggetto + that | So great was the demand that the shop ran out. |
| Such + be + sintagma nominale + that | Such were the delays that we gave up. |
| Comparativo + be + soggetto | Far more serious were the long-term effects. |
Registro
Tutte queste forme appartengono all’inglese formale, scritto e dei discorsi. Nella conversazione è più frequente la frase normale (I cannot accept this., The demand was so great that ...), che è sempre corretta.

Domande frequenti
It wasn't until she called that I understood e Not until she called did I understand hanno lo stesso significato?
Con it, dopo that l’ordine è normale; con Not until in apertura, soggetto e ausiliare si invertono.
Si dice Strange though it may seem o Strange as it may seem?
Che cosa significa Try as she might?
Al posto di might si può dire may, e la frase principale di solito è negativa: she could not open the lid.
Much as o although?
Much as I admire him e Although I admire him very much si somigliano, ma Much as suona più solenne. Dopo Much as soggetto e verbo restano in ordine normale; anche As much as I admire him è corretto.
È corretto More importantly is the fact that?
No. Davanti a be serve un aggettivo: More important is the fact that ...
Si può dire the way how?
No. Si dice the way she did it oppure how she did it, ma that's the way how è scorretto.
