It e they riprendono lo stesso argomento. This e these con un nome di sintesi riassumono l’idea precedente: This decision, These changes. The former e the latter si usano solo con due elementi nominati. That of sostituisce un nome singolare o non numerabile, those of un nome plurale. Such a + nome singolare, such + plurale o non numerabile.
Parole di riferimento: che cosa sostituiscono
| Parola | A che cosa rimanda | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| it, they | alla stessa cosa nominata prima (un nome) | The survey was long. It covered ten cities. |
| this, these + nome | a tutta l’idea appena espressa | Rents rose. This increase hit families. |
| the former, the latter | al primo o al secondo di due elementi nominati | Trams and buses: the former are quieter. |
| that of, those of | a un nome che non vogliamo ripetere («quello di», «quelli di») | The climate of Spain is milder than that of Norway. |
| such a, such | a un tipo, «tale» | Such a policy needs time. |
| do so, the same, one | a un verbo con i suoi complementi, a un’azione o a un nome | Some left early, and others did so later. |
| as follows, the following | in avanti, a ciò che viene dopo | The steps were as follows: ... |
it o this: il riferimento anaforico
L’inglese chiede sempre un soggetto espresso: The survey was long. It covered ten cities. Inoltre un This shows... senza nome è corretto ma vago, e lo stile accademico preferisce un nome che dica che cosa è stato mostrato: This finding shows that... Controlla anche il numero: this result, ma these results. It e they riprendono un nome concreto; this e these indicano un’idea o una frase intera. Il rimando all’indietro si chiama anaforico; quello in avanti, come as follows, cataforico.
this + nome di sintesi e nomi generali
Un nome di sintesi (summarising noun) riassume in poche parole la frase precedente: Prices doubled in two years. This increase...
| Nome | Significato | Che cosa riassume |
|---|---|---|
the former, the latter, that of, those of
«Il primo» e «quest’ultimo» ricordano the former e the latter, ma c’è un dettaglio: valgono solo per due elementi. Buses and trams both run at night; the former are cheaper, the latter faster. Con tre o più elementi si dice the first e the last. L’errore tipico è usare the last al posto di the latter, perché in italiano «l’ultimo» sembra naturale. Il verbo concorda con il nome a cui si rimanda (the latter are se si tratta dei tram). Si scrive the latter, non *the later, e senza -s. È una forma formale e scritta.
L’italiano dice «quello di», «quelli di», e in inglese si dice that of (singolare o non numerabile) e those of (plurale): The population of Milan is smaller than that of Rome. The results of this study are clearer than those of earlier studies. Non esistono *this of, *the one of né *these of. Con un non numerabile non si usa the one: The evidence from Spain is stronger than that from Italy.
such, sostituzione e rimando in avanti
Such significa «tale, di questo tipo». Con un nome singolare numerabile vuole l’articolo, e such va prima di a: such a policy, such an approach. Con un plurale o un non numerabile non c’è articolo: such policies, such evidence, such advice. L’italiano «una tale decisione» porta a errori come *a such decision, *such decision o *such an advice (in italiano «un consiglio» si conta, in inglese advice no). Such measures sono misure di questo tipo; these measures sono quelle misure precise. Such as è un’altra cosa: «come, per esempio».
Per non ripetere un verbo con i suoi complementi si usa do so: Participants could withdraw at any time, and three did so. Non si dice *did it so né *made so, mentre l’italiano «lo fecero» tenta di inserire un pronome. The same corrisponde a «lo stesso»: The same applies to rural schools. One / ones vanno solo con nomi numerabili: a larger sample than the one used in 2019. Dopo if si dice if so o if not. Prima di un elenco si scrive as follows o the following, non *as follow (come l’italiano «come segue») né *as following.
Collegarsi al paragrafo successivo
Un nuovo paragrafo comincia spesso rimandando al precedente: These findings suggest that..., Given this, ..., This raises the question of..., In light of these results, ...

Domande frequenti
The former e the latter: significato e uso
Con tre o più si dice the first e the last.
That of e those of: qual è la differenza?
That of va con il singolare o il non numerabile e those of con il plurale: the climate of Spain, that of Italy; the results of the first group, those of the second.
Such a o such: quando uso l’uno o l’altro?
Such a (such an) va davanti a un nome singolare numerabile: such a policy. Davanti a un plurale o a un non numerabile non ha articolo: such policies, such evidence. La forma a such non esiste.
This o it in un testo: come scelgo?
This rimanda a tutta l’idea precedente e nello stile accademico sta meglio con un nome: This increase, This decision. Anche il numero deve coincidere: this result, these results.
Quando uso do so?
Do so sostituisce un verbo con i suoi complementi già citato: Some students withdrew, and others did so later. Le forme sono do so, did so, doing so e to do so. Non si dice did it so.
Si dice as follows o as follow?
Si dice as follows, con la -s, prima di un elenco: The steps were as follows. È corretto anche the following: The following were recorded.
