Attenuare le affermazioni nell’inglese accademico: may, appear to, it is likely that

Nell’inglese accademico le conclusioni raramente sono categoriche: si attenuano con **may**, **appear to**, **tend to** o **it is likely that**.

Dopo may / might / could, tend to, appear to e likely to si usa la forma base del verbo. Dopo it appears that, it is likely that, it is possible that e suggest that segue una frase completa introdotta da that.

May, might, could e la differenza tra may be e maybe

I tre verbi modali sono seguiti dalla forma base, senza to e senza -s (*may explains, *might to reduce). A parte c’è la coppia may be e maybe. May be è il modale più be: This may be due to the diet. Maybe è un avverbio colloquiale (in italiano «forse»); in un testo scritto si usa perhaps o possibly: Perhaps the effect is smaller. Anche «può darsi che» si rende con it may be that, senza congiuntivo.

Appear e seem: due strutture

Entrambi i verbi funzionano in due costruzioni. Se il soggetto è la cosa stessa, segue to: The sample appears to be small. Se inizi con it, serve una frase completa: It appears that the sample was small. Le due strutture non si mescolano (*The sample seems that it is small). It would appear that suona più cauto e formale di it appears that: il condizionale italiano «sembrerebbe che» ne rende bene il tono.

Tend to, suggest e indicate

Tend to descrive una tendenza generale, non una legge: Older patients tend to recover more slowly (di solito, non sempre). Dopo ci vuole to + forma base, non la forma in -ing. Suggest e indicate reggono that + frase oppure un nome: The results suggest that diet plays a role; The data indicate a link. L’italiano «suggerire di fare qualcosa» induce a dire *suggest to do, ma in inglese si usa suggest that oppure suggest doing: The authors suggest using a larger sample.

Likely ha due strutture: soggetto + is likely to + forma base (Costs are likely to rise) oppure it is likely that + frase (It is likely that costs will rise). It is possible that costs will rise, It is probable that prices will fall. *Costs are probable to rise è un errore molto frequente. Anche will likely (inglese americano) e most likely sono corretti.

Evidence e le espressioni limitative

Evidence è non numerabile e significa «prove, indizi», non «evidenza» nel senso di «cosa ovvia»: There is some evidence that diet matters, little evidence, growing evidence, evidence of a link. Le espressioni limitative restringono la portata della frase: to some extent, to a certain degree, in most cases, in this sample, as far as we know. Sono fisse: *in some extent, *to some degrees, *in the most cases (calco di «nella maggior parte dei casi»).

Rafforzativi, esagerazione ed eccesso di cautela

I rafforzativi (boosters) sono clearly, undoubtedly, it is clear that, there is no doubt that, demonstrate e prove. Usali solo con dati davvero solidi. Un piccolo studio non proves nulla, suggests soltanto; e always o all conviene sostituirli con in most cases. D’altra parte, accumulare attenuazioni (*may possibly perhaps) suona insicuro: ne basta una.

Registro: scritto e colloquiale

Maybe the sample was too small.Perhaps the sample was too small.
I guess prices will rise.Prices are likely to rise.
It's kind of a small effect. The effect is relatively small.
I reckon it works. It appears that it works.
I'm pretty sure about this. There is little doubt that this is correct.

Esempi

  • Diet may influence sleep, but the effect could be small.
  • The sample appears to be too small for firm conclusions.
  • It appears that the sample was too small. Pare che il campione fosse troppo piccolo.
  • It would appear that prices depend mostly on fuel costs.
  • Older patients tend to recover more slowly. I pazienti anziani tendono a guarire più lentamente.
  • The data suggest that stress plays a role in sleep quality.
  • Costs are likely to rise next year.
  • It is possible that the survey missed younger commuters.
  • There is some evidence that remote work reduces travel time.
  • To some extent, the results reflect the small sample.

Se i dati sono deboli, usa may o appear to.

Errori tipici

  • Prices are probable to fall. It is probable that prices will fall. probable solo con it ... that
  • It is likely that prices fall next year. It is likely that prices will fall next year. niente congiuntivo: tempo normale, will per il futuro
  • It may that the sample was too small. It may be that the sample was too small. «può darsi che» è may be that
  • There are some evidences that diet matters. There is some evidence that diet matters. evidence è non numerabile
  • The authors suggest to use a larger sample. The authors suggest using a larger sample. suggest regge -ing o that, non to
  • This maybe due to the diet. This may be due to the diet. modale + be, non l’avverbio maybe
  • In some extent, the results reflect the sample. To some extent, the results reflect the sample. espressione fissa to some extent
  • In the most cases, costs rise. In most cases, costs rise. senza the davanti a most

Domande frequenti

Che cos’è l’hedging nell’inglese accademico?

È l’attenuazione di un’affermazione con strumenti come may, appear to, tend to o it is likely that.

Likely to o it is likely that: quale uso?

Dopo it is likely that segue una frase completa (It is likely that costs will rise), dopo is likely to la forma base (Costs are likely to rise).

Quasi nessuna. Appear è un po’ più formale, e it would appear that è più cauto di entrambi. La grammatica è identica: to + forma base oppure that + frase.

May be o maybe: quando uso l’uno o l’altro?

Usa may be quando è il modale più be (This may be due to age). Maybe è un avverbio colloquiale; in un saggio è meglio perhaps o possibly.

Come attenuare un’affermazione in un saggio in inglese?

Con prove deboli usa may, appear to o there is some evidence that. Per una tendenza, tend to o in most cases. Basta uno strumento per frase.
