Henri adjusted his headset and leaned toward the panoramic interlocking display as the digital marker for express six - oh - one sped toward the northern mouth of the alpine base tunnel . Outside the control center , mist still shrouded the snow - dusted peaks , but inside the sealed dispatch room , twenty monitors tracked the maiden run of the cross - border high - speed service . The train was traveling at two hundred and fifty kilometers an hour , four minutes from entering the thirty - mile subterranean bore , when its automated cab - signaling link dropped into an unverified state . Hardly had the locomotive passed the approach beacon when the telemetry board flashed amber . What troubled Henri most was not the train's formidable velocity , but the total loss of the digital handshake between the national signaling networks . " The border balise is refusing the train's security certificate , " said Anja , the signaling systems specialist perched at the adjacent console . " The Italian balise expects one protocol ; the Swiss transponder , another . " Rarely had any dispatcher in the Alpine sector faced a signaling conflict at such velocity . If Henri tripped the trackside magnetic brakes now , the sudden deceleration would jar four hundred passengers and stall international traffic for the entire morning . " Under no circumstances will I let that train enter the single - bore tunnel without positive cab authority , " Henri said , his hand hovering over the manual red stop plunger . " All you have is forty seconds before the physical interlock triggers automatic braking . " It was Anja's quick fingers that intercepted the failing communication thread . Not only did she isolate the corrupted data telegram from the border loop , but she also routed the train's positioning data through the secondary GSM - railway antenna array atop the mountain ridge . " Hold the manual override for five seconds , " she urged , her voice tight against the hum of cooling fans . " I am pushing a verified frequency profile directly to the driver's cab display . " On the central map , the tiny red indicator pulsed nearer to the tunnel portal : three kilometers , two kilometers , eighteen hundred meters . The silence in the control room grew unbearable . Only when the locomotive's status square turned a steady , luminous green on the dispatch grid did Henri let his fingers release the brake lever . A quiet beep echoed through his headset as the train driver confirmed clear in - cab signaling . Down on the wall monitor , the high - speed express glided into the illuminated arch of the tunnel mouth , smooth and unimpeded , hurtling through the bedrock toward Milan .
