The journey to Derry took me across a frontier that is barely visible on the landscape yet remains historically profound . I had been invited to The Playhouse , an arts centre established in 1992 , to facilitate a weekend residency for young actors from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland . They arrived on a damp Friday evening , bringing heavy backpacks and an understandable degree of caution . Rarely have I encountered a group so initially guarded in a rehearsal room . Community theatre has been utilised extensively for peacebuilding in this region since the 1980s , offering a neutral ground for difficult conversations . My objective for the weekend was to help these teenagers devise a short physical performance about migration and belonging . During the first evening , they were impeccably polite to one another , yet they stuck rigidly to their respective geographical groups . What these young participants required was not a well - intentioned lecture on reconciliation , but a shared artistic problem to solve together . On Saturday morning , I introduced a neutral mask exercise , a technique that forces performers to communicate without facial expressions or spoken dialogue . Deprived of their usual vocal tools , the actors had to rely entirely on posture , gesture , and shared rhythm . It was this enforced silence that finally dismantled the invisible social barriers between them . By the late afternoon , a boy from County Donegal and a girl from Belfast were seamlessly mirroring each other's movements , completely engrossed in constructing a physical narrative . We spent the final day refining their devised scenes . The teenagers chose to explore the historical concept of leaving home , drawing on the island's long legacy of emigration . They constructed a visually striking , wordless sequence using only a collection of vintage suitcases and their own intertwined bodies . Seldom do you witness such a rapid and profound transformation from awkward strangers into a cohesive , trusting ensemble . Before they departed on Sunday , the group walked together across the Peace Bridge , an elegant curved structure that spans the River Foyle . I watched them exchange phone numbers and embrace , their earlier hesitation having entirely vanished into the crisp autumn air . Have you ever participated in a collaborative creative project with people you had never met ? What specific activities or challenges helped you to build trust within the newly formed group ?
