Mateo checked the red digital readout of the weather telemetry unit for the third time , his breath pluming white against the pine - scented gloom . It was barely dawn at three thousand metres in the Sierra Chincua reserve , and the needle of the thermometer hovered at minus one degree Celsius . Beside him on the damp forest floor , his field assistant , Valeria , adjusted the tripod of an acoustic parabolic microphone , glancing anxiously upward . Suspended forty metres above their heads in the crowns of the oyamel firs hung enormous , pendulous clusters of monarch butterflies , packed so tightly together that the branches bent like weighted boughs of cedar . Had a sudden freezing squall struck during the night , the dormant insects would have crystallized and dropped like dead leaves . Rarely had an autumn monitoring expedition begun with such acute apprehension . For three consecutive seasons , the colony counts across central Mexico had shown alarming volatility , driven by illegal logging buffer breaches and shifting storm tracks . What kept the monarchs alive through the mountain winter was not physiological resistance to freezing , but the dense , unbroken umbrella of the forest canopy itself . The ancient firs functioned as an organic thermal blanket , trapping radiant soil heat while deflecting moisture . Should illegal thinnings puncture that ceiling , the microclimate collapses within hours . Valeria raised her binoculars , squinting through the shifting veil of freezing fog . " Can you see any movement along the eastern ridge ? " she whispered . Mateo shook his head . " None yet . If the wings get wet before the air warms , they cannot take flight . " What the acoustic recorder captured in that tense silence was almost imperceptible : not the fluttering roar of millions of beating wings , but a faint , dry rustle like parchment stirred by a draught . It was the sound of thousands of tiny tarsal claws gripping bark and pine needles , shifting their collective mass to insulate the core of each hanging swarm . Not until the sun crested the eastern volcanic peaks did the temperature begin to climb . As the first golden light sliced through the boughs , the frost transformed into ascending vapor . First one orange wing flickered open , then dozens , then entire swarms began to detach , filling the cold mountain air with an undulating cloud of amber and black . Valeria exhaled a long breath she seemed to have held since daybreak , jotting down the preliminary density index in the field log . The canopy had held once again , but both researchers knew how narrow the margin had been .
